a high price on graffiti...

by DeanChristopher @ 2007-05-31 - 21:45:18

Historically, graffiti was a underground movement, born to the Hip-Hop rhythm in the American ‘hoods of the 1970s. It is people’s art, rough and ephemeral. Rough because it was created illegally in public spaces. Ephemeral because its lifespan, subject to external constraints, is necessarily limited. The prohibitions which hit this urban art right from its beginnings in Europe could not stop its expansion during the 1980s. At the end of the decade it had become a veritable fashion phenomenon, in the press and on museum walls. Aside from urban buildings, street furniture and public transport, the graffiti artists created works on canvas, paper or street hoardings which are now prized by a growing number of collectors...

The pioneers

The unquestioned star of the genre is Jean-Michel BASQUIAT who is racking up million-ticket sales (more than forty). On 15 May last, a mixed-medium 1981 work smashed the artist's record in crossing the 10 million dollar mark! Initially estimated at between 6 million and 8 million dollars, the hammer went down on the lot at 13 million dollars (more than 9.6 million euros, Sotheby’s NY). Warhol’s friend with the fleeting destiny (he died at 27 years) signed his first works in the street under the pseudonym Samo. Today a small pencil or graphite drawing changes hands for between 10,000 and 20,000 euros on average and you'll need between 50,000 and 100,000 euros for a paper-based work in crayon. Prices are higher still for large formats in ink or oil pastel.
Another Warhol accolyte, Keith HARING, is also a key graffiti name. He doesn’t reach the heights of Basquiat but has shown steady growth over the last four years. On 8 February last, you'd have needed not less than £56,000 to secure a small 1984 acrylic (50x50 cm) at Sotheby’s London. The same day, Sotheby’s competitor set a new record of £440,000 for a 1983 canvas (Christie’s London). The more affordable FUTURA 2000 is one of the pioneers of urban painting which he created instinctively on the walls of Brooklyn as of the 1970s. Only 3 works from the graffiti artist have been put up for auction in ten years! The latest, an untitled acrylic and aerosol painting on a plank of wood, found a buyer for 4,000 euros in October at Artcurial who will auction a spray-painted graffiti canvas entitled Bar code (1983, 137 x 181 cm) for an estimate of between 4,000 and 5,000 euros...

thinking outside the box...

by DeanChristopher @ 2007-05-29 - 22:36:01

Thinking outside the box is a cliché or catchphrase used to refer to looking at a problem from a new perspective without preconceptions, sometimes called a process of lateral thought. The catchphrase has become widely used in business environments, especially by management consultants and executive coaches, and has spawned a number of advertising slogans...

Do you live in a burglary hotspot?

People living in some UK cities face almost double the chance of being burgled as those in more secure areas, according to a new report.

Researchers from insurer Endsleigh found that residents in Nottingham are almost twice as likely to make a claim than an average household. Leeds and Hull were also found to be among other cities where the risk of being burgled is above average.

Guildford, Swindon and Dundee are among the most secure places to live, the insurer said...(source:virgin media.com)

art sales news...

by DeanChristopher @ 2007-05-23 - 20:22:29

Sotheby's dominates the ‘impressionist and modern’ art sales in New York (source-artprice.com)

Sotheby’s managed, as had been hoped, to outpace its competitor Christie's in the impressionist and modern art sales held on 8 and 9 May 2007, obtaining results which gave it pole position in this round. However, the lead can't yet be described as significant: $278,548,000 compared with $236,464,000 for sales under the hammer at Rockefeller Plaza.

0507-16_01_01

The overall lead seen this month didn't, however, prevent Christie's from achieving sales proving, once again, that this rivalry is benefiting the whole market, with each sale bringing its share of surprises. The Seine as seen by Maximilien LUCE was thus better received at the latter house, with La Seine au pont Saint-Michel selling for $2,500,000, smashing the artist’s previous record. The Seine à Issy, by the same artist, offered by Sotheby's on York Avenue was unsold. Rockefeller Plaza also set 4 new world price records, of which 3 had been held until now by Sotheby’s; notably, Paul SIGNAC’s L’Arrière du Tub, sold for $10,400,000, some 2 million above the high-end estimate. A spring sale benefited Juan GRIS Pot de géranium which achieved $16,500,000, some 9 million more than at Sotheby’s five years earlier. Finally, the 1981 sculpture by Joan MIRO Projet pour un monument pushed up the bidding until the hammer fell at $8,800,000. The final record at this Plaza sale was none other than Alberto GIACOMETTI's L’homme qui chavire whose sale price exceeded the low-end estimate of $6,500,000 by 10 million.

At Sotheby's, Henri MATISSE’s Gris et Jaune de l’Odalisque did not make the low-end estimate but achieved, nonetheless, a little over $13 million. It was the Paul CÉZANNE watercolour, already estimated at $14 million to $18 million which was, without a doubt, the event's highlight, achieving a new world record for the artist’s drawings, now set at $22,750,000. Back in 1999, the auction house had already set the record for a work on paper with Danseuse au repos by Edgar DEGAS. Lyonel FEININGER set the house's second record for this beginning of the month in reaching more than $23 million with his Jesuits IIII.

Despite the buoyancy of the market, a certain sobriety prevailed and the headline lots disappointed. Thus the market leader with his 2004 record of $94,000, saw his Tête d'Arlequin sold for less than the low-end estimate at $13,500,000. In addition, Amedeo MODIGLIANI’s Femme au collier vert estimated at least $12 million to $16 million by Christie’s failed to sell...

Hamilton: I’ll get Ferrari soon ...

by DeanChristopher @ 2007-05-13 - 18:44:12

42464_1

Lewis Hamilton has vowed to beat Ferrari rival Felipe Massa and score his first Formula 1 win soon, after finishing runner-up to the Brazilian for the second straight race.

The British rookie notched up another milestone at the Spanish Grand Prix, moving from a three-way tie for the world championship lead to sole possession of it.

By a nice historical coincidence, he became the youngest driver to achieve that feat since Bruce McLaren – the founder of the eponymous team for which Hamilton now races.

“I keep saying I’m living my dream and it really is true,” beamed Hamilton in the post-race press conference.

“I’ve been working so hard for this, and to come out of only my fourth grand prix leading the world championship – when I’m driving with the top drivers in the world – is just incredible.”

Hamilton moved from fourth to second place on the opening lap after passing Kimi Raikkonen at the first corner and capitalising on an uncharacteristic error from his team-mate Fernando Alonso.

BMW’s Shanghai Surprise ...

Published: April 22, 2007

BMW lit a firecracker at the Shanghai auto show last week, unveiling a design study called the Concept CS that not only signaled an evolution of the company’s designs, it suggested a possible future sedan that would be bigger and more expensive than any existing model.

The Concept CS, which takes its name from highly styled BMWs of the 1960s, is longer, wider and lower than BMW’s current flagship sedan, the 7 Series.
